By the time Faraway Reach came out in 2016, the duo of Michael David and Tyler Blake had extended their reach, both in terms of guests and styles. While mainly based around the kind of bubbly dance-pop that made their first album so good, it also takes on '90s hip-house, slow and smooth R&B, and modern pop to boot. The duo show mastery of all the various styles, ladling sticky sweet melodies on top of sturdy, sometimes borderline transcendent beats. When Classixx released their debut album Hanging Gardens in 2013, it turned out that the Los Angeles duo Tyler Blake and Michael David, previously known for their production, were equally talented as songwriters. These fleeting glimpses of the pop album Classixx might one day make were tantalized, and on their sophomore effort Faraway Reach, they plant their flag even firmer in straight-ahead pop. Their songwriting remains a strong point, and Classixx continue to show a knack for choosing kindred-spirit collaborators. It's more finely polished than the duo's debut, Hanging Gardens, on which they spent years trying to get enough original material for an album. This time, they were able to be more selective. Classixx collaborated with eight singer-songwriters across three continents to round out most of the album's 12 funky instrumentals. The goal was really to visit a lot of different places, Blake says, and work with a lot of different people that were very different from each other.
