The first two-fer is actually the weakest for it finds Barnet during five sessions in 1936-37 searching for a sound of his own. There are a few hot swing numbers Growlin', Nagasaki, Benny Carter's arrangement of Devil's Holiday and a fine feature for the modernaires on Make Believe Ballroom but there is also an excess of sweet sides, erratic vocals including eight by Barnet himself and dull arrangements. It is not until the final two numbers. Complete Charlie Barnet, Vol. Your Rating. And other albums from Charlie Barnet are available on sale at Recordsale.
